KITCHEN MISADVENTURE SERIES - SWEET AND SOUR TILAPIA

This is another fave dish that I got from Mga Luto ni Dennis at iba pa…it was a new way for me to cook tilapia because I knew the family had gotten tired of the usual fried, inihaw or pinangat that we cook around the house. It is really actually just frying but afterwards, sweet and sour sauce was added that made all the difference and a totally new experience for our usual tilapia fare. For the complete recipe please just check out Dennis’ blogsite…all I did was after cleaning and scoring the fish, I rubbed some salt and pepper and let the fish rest for a few minutes while I cut up the vegetables. While the fish fries in a pan I sautéed the ginger, garlic and onions. Then I added the carrots, red bell pepper and tomato catsup and seasoned the dish with salt, pepper, brown sugar and some cornstarch dissolved in water to thicken the sauce a bit. Finally, I poured the sauce over the fried tilapia, garnished with chopped onion leaves and served with hot rice for another yummy lunch! Thank you Dennis!

KITCHEN MISADVENTURE SERIES 60: SWEET AND SOUR TILAPIA

For our lunch today, the hubby wanted me to cook sweet and sour fish but since I was not able to buy any fleshy fish like lapu-lapu, I just settled on the ever-dependable tilapia that can be easily bought at our neighborhood talipapa. I fried the fish that I bought (about a kilo and it yielded four medium-sized fishes) then I set aside two pieces for my daughter because she does not really like viands with sauces like this. She just prefers fried food.

For the sauce, I turned to my favorite food blogger (Connie Veneracion with blogsite at CASA Veneracion) for her tried and tested recipe. She actually had two recipes of sweet and sour fish in her archives it is up to you whichever you choose to follow. I say tried and tested because I have cooked this dish a few times already and it has worked well for me! The hubby and kids just loved it. Thanks again Connie for the delicious recipe you have been sharing!

KITCHEN MISADVENTURE SERIES 34 – Steamed fish in olive oil and sweet and sour fish

Today for our lunch, I decided against cooking tilapia the usual way – simply frying them and serving a vegetable dish on the side. Instead, I opted to cook a healthier version of it via steaming with lots of garlic and ginger and a dollop of olive oil. The recipe for steamed fish (which I got from Pinoycooking rocks) called for some parsley but since I didn’t have any, I substituted onion leaves instead. I also used tilapia because I didn’t have maya-maya or any other bigger fleshy fish since it would just be for myself lang naman. For the rest of the family, I cooked sweet and sour tilapia.

For the sweet and sour tilapia, the fish was fried first in hot oil. Then I prepared the sauce by mixing together some vinegar, sugar, tomato sauce and salt. I also stir-fried some vegetables like onions, ginger, carrots, bell pepper and some onion leaves for garnish. (For the exact recipe search Pinoy cooking rocks) Then when all the fish had finished frying, just pour the sauce and the vegetables over the fish and serve at once.

KITCHEN MISADVENTURES 10 – Sweet and Sour fish

This is another dish that has become a family favorite, particularly the hubby’s. I got the recipe from my favorite food blogger (Connie Veneracion) You will find two recipes of sweet and sour fish in her archive and they’re both delicious… the procedure is basically the same you fry the fish first (any kind of fleshy one will do). Then you mix all the ingredients for the sweet and sour sauce (vinegar, tomato paste, sugar, salt and pepper) and cook over low heat. Finally, you stir-fry the vegetables (ginger, onions, carrots, bell pepper) and assemble everything together – place the fried fish on a platter, top with vegetables and then pour the sauce all over the fish and vegetables. Serve while hot!
